The word "huipil" describes Mayan indigenous blouses that the women of Southern Mexico and Guatemala have made by hand for centuries.
The embroidery of every huipil is unique, telling the story of the woman who made it and the community she hails from. Artisans feel great pride when they see their huipiles worn outside of their community, they tell us. It is a sign of respect for their gorgeous work and their deep traditions.
This incredible vintage piece is covered in hand-embroidery in the French Knot style, depicting animals, plants and Mayan spiritual symbols from the Guatemalan community of Quiché.
The entire bodice of the huipil is covered in embroidery, front and back, with a cut-off sleeve.
Measuring 24 1/2" wide x 21" long, the piece will fit a women' size XS-S beautifully. Truly a treasure!
